At Karakan we believe that employment for people with a disability or mental illness can be a vital step in the recovery journey. Having a ‘job’ provides people with feelings of value and self-worth while also presenting a purpose and of course the benefit of being paid for your time and effort. With this in mind Karakan has also supported the work of KBH Enterprises in Toowoomba and we are now looking to develop a number of additional ‘Social Enterprises’ that will provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities and/or mental illness.
We have looked to develop these opportunities not only for our current clients and their identification of ’employment’ as one of their goals, but also to coincide with the introduction of the NDIS – where many people with mental illness and disability will have the opportunity to access supported employment roles which were previously out of reach.
